The Poffertjeskraam

The Poffertjeskraam

Aweh, guys!

Ah the magic of the Netherlands… A few months ago a stall selling poffertjes (tiny buckwheat pancakes traditionally served with a pat of butter and a dusting of icing sugar) popped up out of nowhere in the park down the street from our flat in Woerden. We’ve had them as a street food option at the Albert Cuyp market so we were familiar with the concept. It was called the “Poffertjeskraam” which is funny in Afrikaans because “kraam” means labour from birth… Here it just means stall.

It’s operating until the end of this week (grump!) before packing up and moving to the next little town so we knew we had to get our butts down there before missing out. We tried visiting before but they were really busy during the day.

We decided to have an impromptu dinner. In the darkness it looked like a carousel and shone like a beacon. The sun set at 17:30 due to daylight saving time causing the temperature to plummet but it was so cosy inside the little stall.

We ordered warm Chocomel (a thick chocolate milk) with Grand Marnier poffertjes for me and warm cherries for Hubby. Poffertjes are made in a divotted pan, smeared with butter, poured over with batter and then turned and trimmed into submission until tender, fluffy and golden brown. They weren’t shy with the whipped cream or the booze and on these chilly nights it was most welcome.

Definitely an enjoyable Dutch evening…. or a more amusing Afrikaans one.
