Woerden's Kaas Markt

Woerden's Kaas Markt

Aweh, guys!

One of the best advantages of living in the Netherlands is the cheese. I’ve not had one that wasn’t mind-blowingly tasty, from a smooth, creamy gouda to a sharp, funky pecorino. They also have different flavourings like olive, cumin and herbs. Perfect for a glass of wine or a cheeseboard! Luckily, we live in Woerden where they have one of the original cheese markets which has been held every Saturday morning during the summer months in het Kerkplein since 1885!

Naturally we had to go see for ourselves! On the way in we were given a taster by a gentleman in his cheese truck display. It had sundried tomato, olives and truffle. I had died and gone to cheese heaven… and that was only the beginning.

There were fruit stalls, flower booths and bakery stands. Berries are in season and the market was bountiful with cherries, strawberries and blueberries… they also had apples as big as my head. And no good cheese market is complete without a real live cow or tractor.

Not to be outshone by produce alone, there were also activities like the auction, the singers, live music, a cheese wheel toss and milking the aforementioned cow. There were also tons of treats like stroopwaffels, ice cream and nuts. And that’s when Hubby saw it…

There was a stall called Padkos selling South African delicacies! Unfortunately, we were too late for biltong (apparently it sells out fast) but we were both able to snag a bobotie pie with chutney. The lady makes it herself and it tastes just like Mrs. Balls!

I highly recommend visiting any cheese market for an authentic Dutch experience… and who knows, you might just leave with a wheel of cheese!
