The Dutch Movie Experience

Aweh, guys!

Like any sane Marvel fan, we were well aware that Avengers Endgame was about to hit the silver screen, and like any sane Marvel fan, we needed tickets to the IMAX theatre. The closest one to us is in Den Haag at Pathé which is an hour long train ride away.

We arrived at 12PM while the show started at 2PM so we decided to go have a snack in the form of Dunkin Donuts which is not available back home. I got a unicorn doughnut and Hubby got a croissant doughnut and we both had coffee and they were delish. Different to Krispy Kreme but solid in their own right. Once we were done, we decided to have a look around.

The area we were in is called Spui which also has a huge shopping district and we found the most amazing oriental supermarket! It’s literally called Amazing Oriental Supermarket. We found lots of spices, sauces, ramen and even Milo! They also sold hot food like springrolls and samoosas. It caters for different Asian cuisines, not a specific one. We decided once the movie was done, we would come back here.

So, we went inside the theatre and eyed all the amazing concessions. It’s not limited to popcorn, slush puppies and whispers. They had a pick and mix for dried fruit and nuts, sweet or salty popcorn, nachos, sweets, Starbucks… we decided to forgo this as we are honestly getting broke and payday is only mid-month. Maybe next time!

We were a little unsure about the IMAX glasses. We paid online for them and back home we would stand in the concessions line to get them. I took my place in line while Hubby went to find out. Turns out we would get them at the door.

The doors open and we settle in for the movie praying there wouldn’t be subtitles. Hubby selected OV (original version) so we knew it would be in English at least. Alas, subtitles abounded! If they had stayed in the middle of the screen, I wouldn’t have been so salty, but they positioned themselves under who ever was speaking. That said, there were some funny translations. Like a butt is “kont” and it doesn’t hurt to read the subtitles to improve your Dutch.

The movie was very well done and a fitting end to the Thanos saga. The theatre itself is huge with comfortable seats and a well behaved audience. Unfortunately, subtitles are a thing for all movies that aren’t dubbed in Dutch, so that’s something to get used to.

We went back to the Oriental Supermarket and got a great deal for a 3 pack of sauces, different spices and dried mushrooms, but once we were at the till, we saw it… cream soda! I prepared myself for disappointment as it’s not spelled creme soda. This one was very vanilla tasting and less tart so unfortunately it is not a good enough dupe. Worth a try though!
