Our First Easter

Our First Easter

Aweh, guys!

So, in our previous instalment, Hubby was out for the count with an injured foot. I had wrapped it as best I could with the paltry bandages in the first aid kit but knew we needed something sturdier as well as some pain meds. Also, hubby was in low spirits as we were hoping to go to a festival on Easter Monday which might not happen now. So, I decided to whip up an Easter feast and let him rest.

In the Netherlands, Easter is a big deal and one of the ways they like to celebrate is with a lavish brunch. Taking the idea of brunch as inspiration, I created a shopping list in my mind before I ordered a bus on TURNN via the app. Since it was a weekend a private bus arrived instead of the larger branded bus. It was also free as the gent did not have a card reader for the OV kaart. I requested on the app to go to Het Rond which is a large shopping centre twenty minutes away.

My first stop was at Kruidvat which is similar to Clicks in South Africa. They sell toiletries, health aids and sweets. I was able to use my rubbish Dutch to request where the bandages are, and the lady understood me at least. I picked up some crepe bandages (also some to replace what we took from the first aid kit), ibuprofen and aspirin. The aspirin was so difficult to find, and I was only able to find a small box. The Dutch use paracetamol as a cure all… imagine being allergic to it here.

Next I went to Jumbo to get some brunch supplies like croissants, sausages and orange juice. They also have the best mini Easter eggs that are filled with different flavours like crème brulee, praline, caramel and coconut.

After that I wanted to go to Albert Heijn but as I was making my way there a gentleman rushed up to me and gave me a free bunch of tulips! It is tulip season in the Netherlands and there was a whole group of people handing out these beautiful bouquets. What a lovely gesture. There was also a choir to brighten up the festivities. As I was leaving Albert Heijn, I was offered to pick up a freebie for Easter brunch and I selected a bottle of advocaat; a thick egg brandy.

I returned back to my hubby, wrapped his foot, cooked up a delightful brunch and gave him some drugs. I think he’s in better spirits already.
